A collaborative effort with fellow Deakin colleagues Kristy Hess, Angela Blakston and Matthew Ricketson has seen our article, titled 'Ink in our veins': Insights from Australia's small-town family newspaper dynasties', being published in the academic journal Communication Research and Practice.
It is just one of a number of research outputs stemming from an Australian Research Council Linkage project led by Professor Hess, with industry partner Country Press Australia (CPA). CPA is a not-for-profit representative body with about 240 rural, regional and suburban member mastheads.
The project focused on innovation and the civic future of Australia's council press. As we collected data for this project, we realised that a number of the mastheads were owned by families, and had been for decades. In fact, our researched found 11 independently owned Australian newspaper companies that had remained under family leadership for at least 100 years.
What could we learn from these long-running dynastic news companies that had endured through time?
We adopted a temporal reflexivity lens to position history as a consideration in our study of innovation and journalism's future more broadly. To read about our findings, use this link: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/22041451.2024.2395684#abstract
